Utilities companies have taken notice to this trend and have established net metering programs. These programs gift homeowners whose solar systems overproduce with energy credits. These energy credits can be used during the less sunny winter months and ensure that homeowners will rarely have to pay their utility company more than their monthly $5-$10 connection fee. In some states, these “gifts” can be sold back to the utility company for cash at the end of the month or year.

Solar is 22% Off this Holiday Season

Ever since the mid 2000s, the federal government has provided solar buyers with a 30% federal investment tax credit (ITC). This tax credit allows homeowners to take 30% of the total cost of their new solar system and apply it as a tax credit in the following year. As solar has become more affordable, the government has reduced the size of this solar savings tax credit.

Luckily, homeowners who choose to go solar this holiday season will be able to lock in a tax credit worth 22% of the overall cost of their solar system. On a $22,000 system this would equate to $4,840 in total savings.

If a car dealership offered you $5,000 off the price tag of a brand-new car, you’d probably take it. Not to mention that states and municipalities offer their own solar incentives that chip even more off the total cost of your system.

Unfortunately, after December of 2021, homeowners will no longer be able to benefit from the federal tax credit as it is stopping for residential properties in 2022. This means that by waiting just one holiday season to go solar, homeowners will lose out on thousands of dollars in potential solar savings.
