Whether you root for the Cubs or the Cardinals, all Illinoisans can agree on a few basic principles: deep dish pizza is the way to go, and we can all work together to keep Illinois beautiful. We can’t keep burning fossil fuels to meet the energy demands of the nation without short and long-term consequences on the environment, so renewable energy sources like solar are increasing in popularity and affordability.
With that being said, 2021 is the perfect time to go solar and Illinois is the perfect state to make the switch! Illinois has approximately 11,000 state homes powered by solar, and counting. Over the next 5 years, Illinois is projected to rank 20th in state rankings for solar. Illinois has a goal to have 25% of its energy needs met by renewable energy sources by 2025. The Prairie State is also one of the best states to make the switch to solar, offering generous incentives and making solar more affordable for the average homeowner.
Many residents of Illinois have gone solar by purchasing their systems outright, or by doing a power purchase agreement (or PPA). Knowing if solar ownership or a PPA with one of the many solar comapines in Illinois is the best option for your home can be difficult and confusing. Check out the information below about going solar in Illinois to see what’s best for you.

The state Illinois offers generous state and utility incentives for homeowners who are looking to make the switch to renewable energy. Net metering, solar renewable energy credits (SRECs), tax exemptions, and federal incentives make going solar more affordable for the homeowner and make the state one of the top states in the nation for solar.
Because of so many local benefits, solar is a great option for homeowners in Illinois. In fact, Illinois has a renewable portfolio standard that means that the state is committed to producing 25% of its electricity by renewable resources by the year 2025. To accomplish this goal, the state is offering incentives to help its citizens put solar on their roofs.
Net Metering – In Illinois, your utility company is required under Illinois law to track your renewable energy production and give you credits for any excess energy that is produced. At the end of an annual period, these credits expire and revert to the utilities company without compensation. Thus, there is no need for a homeowner to purchase a system that produces much more energy than your household uses.
Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) – Because Illinois is committed to producing 25% of its electricity through renewable energy resources, it is offering a program called “Illinois Shines” that gives homeowners one solar renewable energy credit for every megawatt hour produced by your system. Homeowners can then sell these credits and generate income throughout the life of the entire system.
Property Tax Exemption – When residential solar buyers register their system with the chief county assessment officer, it will be re-valued as a conventional energy system (much cheaper) meaning property tax will be only slightly higher than before.
Less than 3% of the current U.S. population are enjoying the benefits & savings of solar energy. Our joy is knowing that our customers are saving money and reducing their carbon footprint. We want the same for you.
