Adding an energy storage system to your solar panel system can enhance your energy independence and provide 24/7 power from a clean, renewable resource, despite power outages or gloomy weather without pulling from the utility grid! Battery storage is great for homeowners who live in areas with less than 1:1 net metering and/or Time of Use (TOU) rate changes.

Solar panels combined with energy storage systems allow homeowners to extend their energy savings and increase their return on investment.

BLUE RAVEN SOLAR OFFERS THE FOLLOWING BATTERIES TO ADD TO YOUR SOLAR PANEL SYSTEM:

We offer battery storage options for big homes, little homes, and everything in between. Basic household appliances such as lights, internet routers, refrigerators, and microwaves can all be powered by an essential single battery package. Larger appliances which use more power, like air conditioners and ovens, often require larger home storage solutions. Learn more about the battery packages we recommend:

FranklinWH
  • Model: aPower Battery
  • Warranty: 12 yrs
  • kWh per Battery: 13.6
  • kw Max Cont. Output: 5 kW
  • Max Batteries per System: 15
  • Chemistry: Lithium Phosphate (LFP)

FranklinWH has battery storage options for big homes, little homes, and everything in between. Basic household appliances such as lights, internet routers, refrigerators, and microwaves can all be powered by their essential single battery package, the aGate. Larger appliances like air conditioners and ovens use a lot more power, so FranklinWH recommends their whole home package with multiple batteries, including the aGate and an aPower unit, the next storage system option up.

Exact storage needs can be found through their energy calculator.

Enphase
  • Model: IQ5P Battery
  • Warranty: 15 yrs
  • kWh per Battery: 5
  • kw Max Cont. Output: 3.84 kW
  • Max Batteries per System: 8
  • Chemistry: Lithium Phosphate (LFP)

Enphase released a new generation of storage systems, compatible with retrofits and new solar panel systems. The two systems have different capacities, making them a versatile option. With the ability to install multiple units, homeowners can add up to 30kWh of energy storage capacity. Enphase also manufactures inverters, and their batteries work best when coupled with them.

Tesla
  • Model: Powerwall 2 Battery
  • Warranty: 10 yrs
  • kWh per Battery: 13.6
  • kw Max Cont. Output: 5 kW
  • Max Batteries per System: 10
  • Chemistry: Lithium Phosphate (LFP)
Tesla Powerwall 2 Battery

The Tesla Powerwall has three different options, all with the same energy capacity. Their differences are in other specifications, like flood resistance, certification standards, and size. All are compatible with retrofits and new solar arrays and can power a home for about 36 hours.*

HOW SOLAR + STORAGE WORKS

Solar energy is produced when photons from the sun knock electrons loose in solar panels. Electrons flow in a direct current (DC) to an inverter, which converts the DC power into alternating current (AC) power, which is the usable power household appliances need to operate. Because of this conversion, solar energy can power a home. Without a battery, any excess production is sent to the utility grid, typically when homeowners are not using much electricity.

An energy storage system, more commonly known as a battery, allows for excess solar energy to be stored for later use in lieu of using power from the utility grid. In the event of a power outage, an energy system can quickly switch to battery power, allowing you to continue to enjoy the benefits of your solar system, even when the utility power is out.

With lithium-ion phosphate batteries, which is what most energy storage systems are today, lithium ions are moved through an electrolyte inside the battery. The buildup of free electrons is how electricity is stored, and when the battery is used, the flow of ions is reversed, sending that energy to the home.

BENEFITS OF ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS

Energy independence is one of the main reasons homeowners go solar, right behind the opportunity for more savings. Less power needs to be pulled from the utility grid, power outages are less impactful, and with monitoring apps, homeowners can choose if their panels charge their battery or send energy back to the grid.

Homeowners can also increase the value of their home with a battery. For every dollar saved on utility bills with a solar panel system and a storage system, home value increases by $20. With home storage solutions reducing the need to pull from the utility grid, savings, and home value, can increase.

FAQS

What is the warranty on batteries?

Different storage solutions will have different warranties. For example, the FranklinWH battery comes with a 12-year warranty, starting from the installation date or 12 months after the manufacture date, whichever is first.

Does a battery work on days that are not sunny?

Solar energy storage systems are designed to charge during peak sunlight hours so they can power household appliances when the sun is not out. Some battery systems can also be charged directly from the grid, giving you peace of mind in rain or shine.

Do I need a solar battery?

Not all solar owners want a solar battery, though many do. It can be a great investment for homeowners who live in sunny climates, as they will be able to charge their batteries often.

Do solar batteries apply for the federal tax credit?

Yes, the cost of the battery is included in the full cost of the system. It also applies to the battery on its own.
